As part of the United Nations'commemoration of UN Day on October 24, UN4U provided our students the opportunity to have an up-close and personal overview of the UN with a UN official, followed by a Q&A of what is happening in the world.
Mr. John Ericson, Chief of Outreach Unit for Strategic Planning and Staffing at the United Nations addressed our East-West community on the role of the United Nations as well as the Millennium Development Goals: End Poverty and Hunger, Universal Education, Gender Equality, Child Health, Maternal Health, Combat HIV/AIDS, Environmental Sustainability, Global Partnership.
Ms. Gorry, who has been running the Model UN program at East-West for the past three years, spoke with enthusiasm about encouraging our students to become active members of East-West's Model UN. She explained that the Global Classrooms Model UN program is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.
We can see Ms. Gorry and Mr. Ericson had a very captive audience.
With some taking notes...
Our East-West students are very concerned with current issues. They had thought out questions that even surprised our speaker. One was about the Piracy attacks in Somali, and another about what sanctions are in place when countries bypass UN authority?
