  • As we enter the Year of the Snake, I want to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year!

To celebrate, families get together for a festive meals at each other's houses or in restaurants nowadays to eat special holiday foods. Cell phones are constantly chiming with QQ chat messages and with incoming calls from family and friends far away.

In cold places like Beijing or New York, families will often gather around a hot pot where cabbage, mushrooms, fish balls, and paper-thin slices of meat is dipped into a fragrant broth to cook instantly before being dipped into a flavored sauce and eaten.

Outside, firecrackers and other inciendiary devices are set off to scare away bad luck. I once spent Chinese New Year in the southern city of Kunming where the noise from the firecrackers continued for more than for straight 48 hours; sleep was impossible, it was just one big party going on!

The nice thing about working in an internationally-themed school like East-West is that New Year's comes several times a year. So as we dig out from this snow storm, I'd like to wish everyone a lucky New Year filled with good fortune and health.

Shin Nen Kwai La! (northern Chinese way to say Happy New Year!)

Gong Shi Fai Tsai! (southern Chinese way to say Happy New Year!)

    Warm Regards,

    Ben Sherman
    Principal
    East-West School

  • Attached are a couple of photos of Ms. Sharifi, who is from the Iranian American Society, visiting our AP class today.  She was such a gracious visitor! She brought tasty Persian, gave us a geographical lesson, showed us Persian money, spoke to us in Farsi, and let us see copies of Iranian children's books and the Koran.  It was such a nice addition to our reading of Nafisi's book; I'm so glad she could make it!  I would love to have her back again, and would recommend her to any history classes that might have relevant content she could add to.

"Sharifi shed light on the fact that the new regime was very cruel and disrespectful of women. She said that the Iranian government claims they are following the Quran.  However, the Quran does not explicitly suggest that women be forced to wear headscarf and so on and so forth.  It was very eye-opening to hear about the kinds of conditions that Iranian women encounter on a daily basis." - Ashley Vincent, student

  • Our junior class students, parents and guardians were invited to come learn about the college admission process and all the exciting opportunities available for them as they continue their educational career at East-West.  During our junior parent night we covered numerous topics, such as: SAT Prep, AP classes and graduation requirements.  Our Principal, High School Assistant Principal, guidance counselor, college counselor and Kaplan Test Prep representative were all in attendance answering questions and making sure our students had all the information needed to have a successful junior and senior year!

We were excited and happy to have our senior class parents, guardians and students in attendance for our 2nd Annual Financial Aid Night.  East-West Faculty and Staff worked with our students individually to make sure that they had successfully completed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), an important part of the college admission process.  When needed, we also helped our families with the TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) application and with the CSS profile (College Scholarship Search Profile).
