  • New York City holds a countless number of annual parades and street festivals each year. The first week in October on a Saturday is always The Korean Day Parade and Festival. This year the parade celebrated the 33rd year of Korean cultural awareness in the New York City Tri-State area.

The parade marches down 6th Ave starting at around 39th St and ends at 32nd St, where a block long festival is held with traditional food vendors, show performances and other cultural activities.

And EAST-WEST was there as well!  Ms Rhi, East-West’s ESL / Korean teacher was generous enough to organize 40 EWSIS students and parents to participate in this annual EWSIS tradition.  Ms. Rhi was accompanied by East-West  ESL teacher, Mr. DeMeo, who kept the school bus active with questions and cheers.  While marching in the parade, the East-West School banner was recognized by many in NYC’s Korean cultural circle. Marching bands, wonderful Korean food, and K-Pop music and dance were enjoyed by all.

  • Each year since introducing Rachel's Challenge, Ms. Marinos, Chair of the Social Studies Department, have worked to reinforce the ideas and goals of Rachel's Challenge with our students.
Ms. Marinos shares Rachel's story and her message of starting a chain reaction with simple acts of kindness. Ms. Marinos shares Rachel's story and her message of starting a chain reaction with simple acts of kindness.
During one morning Muster, Ms. Marinos spoke about Rachel Scott, who was the first student killed in the Columbine High School tragedy in 1999.
This year, we continue to spread Rachel's message to our students.  The walls of East-West will be covered with hand traced cut-outs of students explaining HOW they plan on achieving EACH challenge this year.  Our students will be setting their goals for the year based on these challenges.
    Rachel’s Challenge goals:

    1.       Dream Big

    2.       Look for the best in others

    3.       Start a chain reaction

    4.       Act of kindness

    5.       Positive influences

East-West has created a Friends of Rachel (F.O.R.) club to keep Rachel's message and create a safe learning environment for all our students.

FOR club meets every Thursday, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm in room 409.  For further information, you may contact Mr. Pierini at jpierini@ewsis.org.
