There will be no after school activities, on Wednesday, November 27th.  Students will be dismissed at 2:58 p.m.  School, will be closed, Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th, in observance of Thanksgiving.   Students will return, on Monday, December 2nd.  Thank you, and have a pleasant evening.   • December 7, 2013 PTA Meeting

    Dear East-West Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

    We want to wish all of you a Happy Holiday!

    The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will hold its next meeting on Saturday, December 7 at 10:00 a.m.  Our meeting will begin with a complimentary breakfast buffet followed by the business portion of the meeting.   The PTA and Principal, Mr. Sherman and interim acting Assistant Principals, Ms. Bradsher and Mr. Chang, will present up-to-date news and information concerning the school.

    One important item on this month’s agenda is the PTA’s expedited election forPTA Vice-President.  We regret to inform you that our current Vice-President, Mark Choi, has tendered his resignation.  We congratulate Mr. Choi on his new job, and hope that he will still be able to volunteer some of his time to help out with school events.  Anyone interested in running for this position, please contact us at pta@ewsis.org and we will put your name on the ballot.  You must be present at this meeting to accept the nomination and run for office.

    Our membership drive is ongoing so please be encouraged to sign-up and send in your dues to the PTA.  If you have not yet contributed, please take the opportunity to do so at this coming meeting.  Our suggested contribution is $50.00, but we appreciate any amount that you are able to donate.

    In order to foster better communication, we are in the process of updating our email contact list. Please take a moment to send us an email at pta@ewsis.org and request to be added on to our contact list.  We will be utilizing this tool more to communicate with all of you in regards to PTA news and announcements.

    And finally, we always allow plenty of time for a question and answer period so that the concerns of our parents can be addressed by the school administration.

    Immediately following the PTA meeting, our Assistant Principal, Ms. Bradsher, will be holding a separate meeting to update parents on 8th Grade Stepping Up plans and activities. All 8th Grade parents are encouraged to stay for this informative meeting.

  • High School Application

    Please remember High School Applications need to be submitted to our Middle School Guidance Counselor, Mr. Diaz, in Room 423 no later than Wednesday, November 27, 2013.  If you have any questions or need assistance in completing the application, please contact Mr. Diaz by phone, 718.353.0009, or by email at: cdiaz@ewsis.org.

  • 8th Grade Fundraiser

    Dear Families,

    East-West 8th graders will participate in several fundraising opportunities to help subsidize the individual cost for each 8th grade student's Stepping Up dues and trip.  We are encouraging all students to participate.

    A packet outlining the first fundraising activity was sent home on Thursday, November 7th.

    Money will be collected on two days: November 15th and November 22nd.  All orders placed will arrive on December 16th just in time for the holidays.

  • Twenty-Eight Students Selected to Participate in DREAM-SHSI

    Twenty-eight of our middle school students were selected to participate in the DOE's DREAM-SHSI.  DREAM-SHSI is an extracurricular program of rigorous coursework designed to assist eligible NYC students in preparing for the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT).

    Students were selected by the DOE based on the following criteria:

    • be a current 6th grade student,
    • be economically disadvantaged as defined by Title 1 Free Lunch status,
    • have a minimum scale score of 312 on the 2013 grade 5 NYS ELA exam,
    • have a minimum scale score of 306 on the 2013 grade 5 NYS Math exam, and
    • have had a minimum attendance rate of 90% during grade 5.

    Letters to qualifying students were distributed to them on November 7th and are to be returned by November 12th.

  • Pep Rally High School Announcement

    Good Evening, This is the East-West School of International Studies calling with an important announcement. If your child is normally dismissed before 1:26 pm, they are expected to stay until 1:26 pm for tomorrow only.  Tomorrow after school, student government will be hosting our first pep rally at East-West. The pep rally will begin at 2:30 and end at 4:30. Tickets are $1.00 and will be sold throughout the day, not at the door.   • Last Day To Turn In Senior Dues

    Class of 2014,

    Last day to turn in your mandatory senior dues of $130, which covers your graduation cap, gown, graduation ceremony, and yearbook is due on Friday, November 1, 2013.
